Empower Minds

Dedicated to a brighter future for students and residents through education and cultural empowerment.

Our Story Unveiled

GetCAPSS.org, a Miami Dade College-based non-profit, is committed to enhancing college retention rates by offering educational and cultural services. We provide workshops, motivational programs, financial resources, and business consulting for startups. Additionally, we raise funds to provide educational resources to communities in need.

GETCAPSS (Get Connected and Promote Student Success) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational, cultural, and professional development services to students at Miami Dade College and residents across South Florida. Founded in 2001 as a social experiment driven by a passion for inclusion and equity, GETCAPSS has grown into a dynamic network of educators, entrepreneurs, consultants, event planners, artists, and performers.

Our mission is to boost college retention rates among first- and second-year students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. We strive to address the systemic and psychological challenges that lead to student dropout and limited upward mobility. In today’s evolving economic and social environment, communities face mounting challenges, from the impacts of fiscal policy to shortages of accessible support services. Our programs address these urgent issues by developing a support system that fosters mental health, educational opportunities, and financial growth.
We recognize that student activism and engagement are directly tied to information literacy, making education not only a personal benefit but a vital component of civic empowerment.

:

• Workshops aimed at identifying the root causes of student dropout and disengagement
• Motivational programs that foster mental wellness and resilience
• Financial resource initiatives to provide opportunities for at-risk youth
• Business consulting services for startup entrepreneurs in underserved communities.

Florida is home to over 1.6 million Caribbean immigrants, representing 41% of all Caribbean migrants in the U.S., with the majority living in the tri-county region of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach. Many of these individuals live in low-income areas that are disproportionately impacted by unstable economic, political, and social systems, which further complicate their access to education and opportunities for upward mobility.

In response to these challenges, GETCAPSS employs a strategic blend of cost-effective operations, program innovation, community engagement, and socially responsible initiatives. We aim to build student confidence, foster local leadership, and empower communities to overcome both immediate and long-term obstacles.

To realize this vision, we are requesting a $50,000 grant toward our $350,000 goal from charitable foundations and corporate sponsors. With the right funding, GETCAPSS can expand its impact, grow its services, and continue serving as a vital resource for the communities that need it most.

ADDITIONAL FUNDING AND SUSTAINABILITY PLAN

To ensure long-term financial sustainability, GETCAPSS will adopt a diversified funding approach that includes seasonal revenue streams, community partnerships, and culturally rooted social events.

Revenue Streams

  •  Seasonal Fluctuations: GETCAPSS’s quarterly revenues are expected to vary due to seasonal patterns.  Strategic planning will coordinate programming and fundraising efforts with peak engagement times to maximize cash flow.

  • Public Fundraising Events: A primary source of revenue will come from community fundraising activities like concerts, food festivals, and raffles. These events will not only bring in income but also raise community awareness and foster engagement with our mission.

Food Gleaning Initiative

Every year, thousands of pounds of food go to waste because of inefficient distribution systems that connect donors with underserved communities. GETCAPSS aims to bridge this gap by:

  •  Establishing a food collection network by partnering with local distribution centers     willing to donate non-perishable items, such as canned goods.

  •  Collections will occur monthly on a designated day and time.

  • Donated food will be distributed to communities facing food insecurity through local  outreach program.

Cultural Social Events

South Florida’s vibrant tourism and cultural scene presents an excellent opportunity for sustainable fundraising. GETCAPSS will hold quarterly themed events that highlight the rich cultural traditions of Caribbean and Latin communities through music, dance, and food.

  •  Events will be hosted at different locations throughout South Florida to enhance reach and visibility.

  •  Advance tickets will be sold online, and at-the-door concessions will be available to attendees.

  •  Proceeds from these events will be directed toward supporting scholarship programs, youth activities, and the distribution of community resources.
